Jeremy Root
Tennis Director
A Roseburg native, Jeremy has been a dedicated tennis player and coach in the community for most of his life. He began teaching in the late 1980s under UVTC pros Kevin Cory and Brett Hall and spent several years playing, coaching, and traveling around the Pacific Northwest before becoming Head Pro at UVTC in 1999. His decade at the helm was a time of growth, culminating in the expansion of UVTC’s indoor courts.
However, after enduring nine knee surgeries—including two total knee replacements—and three back surgeries, Jeremy stepped away from full-time coaching in 2012 to pursue a career in insurance. Despite the transition, his passion for the sport never faded—he continued coaching the Roseburg girls’ high school tennis team for 10 years and remained involved in the local tennis scene.
In the fall of 2022, when the opportunity arose to return to UVTC, Jeremy and the board agreed it was the perfect fit. Now, as Tennis Director, he oversees the program while teaching junior tennis part-time and playing a little tennis and pickleball. Though he’s spending fewer hours on the court than before, he’s excited to be back where he belongs—at UVTC, sharing his love for the game.

John Auer
Tennis Professional
Born and raised in Southern California, John’s passion for tennis ignited in his teens after witnessing the legendary Agassi-McEnroe rivalry in the 1992 Wimbledon semifinals. As a junior, he spent time training at Bolletieri’s Tennis Academy in Florida but primarily honed his skills at Tennis Anyone, the largest tennis academy in Southern California.
John’s competitive aspirations were cut short due to multiple injuries, including one that required surgery. Stepping away from the sport, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force before returning to Southern California and Tennis Anyone, where he became a head pro and managed the Claremont branch while pursuing degrees in Philosophy and Fine Art at Pitzer College.
After graduating, John relocated to the Portland area to study Software Engineering at Oregon Tech. However, his passion for coaching remained, and when Lake Oswego Tennis Center needed an instructor, he joined their team, teaching there for seven years before moving to Roseburg.

Andrew Humphreys
Born and raised in Oakland, Oregon, Andrew grew up immersed in sports, eagerly trying his hand at nearly every game he could play. In high school, he earned All-State honors in basketball and later went on to play three years of college basketball before earning a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. During his time in college, he discovered a passion for coaching and has since dedicated himself to mentoring young athletes in basketball, soccer, track, volleyball, tennis, and pickleball.
Although Andrew had limited opportunities to play tennis growing up due to attending a small high school, he enjoyed every chance he got. Years later, he was introduced to pickleball and quickly found a new passion. The sport’s social nature and the welcoming community made it easy and fun to pick up. His love for the game eventually led him to UVTC, where he played alongside his pickleball friends. It was there that a tennis pro took him under his wing, helping him refine his technique and deepen his appreciation for racket sports.
Andrew’s involvement at UVTC grew as he began assisting with youth tennis classes and facilitating open play sessions for pickleball. Over the past several years, he has played a key role in expanding UVTC’s pickleball program, leading skills and drills classes, coaching young players, and organizing camps to help develop the next generation of athletes. His dedication to coaching and fostering a love for the game continues to make a lasting impact on the UVTC community.
